PATOOK PRESS KIT
Published June 21st, 2017
Hi - thanks for your interest in Patook! Patook is a strictly platonic friend-making app that uses Artificial Intelligence (AI) to block flirting, and it's launching officialy in the world on July 7th, 2017 at 8AM PST. I'd love your help in revealing it to the world.
If there's anything I can do to help, please don't hesitate to contact me directly at email@example.com.
- Tony, Founder at Patook LLC.
"what"Patook is an app used for making strictly platonic friends. It uses AI to identify flirty messages and prevent users from flirting.
"why flirt detection?"There have been some attempts in the past to create friend-making apps but they've turned into dating apps after short periods. The cycle is as follows:
- Jane joins app X looking for platonic friends
- Bob joins app X looking for platonic friends
- Ross joins app X looking for something more than friends
- Ross tries to hit on Jane
- Jane leaves app X disappointed (or even disgusted)
- Bob leaves since the only other users are looking for more than friends
- Repeat - the friendship app turns into a dating app
The premise of Patook is based on eradicating that problem. Anything that is even a hint more than strictly platonic is immediately banned. No romantic advances, no flirting/hitting on, no innuendos, no "friends first then we'll see" behaviors. And it's done by an AI that was trained on millions of creepy messages from around the internet. Over 5% of users who tried to join were banned before their first message was even delivered.
what's the scoop?Patook is launching across the world on July 7th. It has been in a low-key beta since Q3 2016 and has resulted in over 1,500,000 messages exchanged and several tens of thousands new platonic friendships formed.

"why" (main quotes and reasoning points)1- It's hard to make friends. Patook LLC ran a survey with over 2,000 respondents and more than 3/10 men and 4/10 women find it hard to make friends. Survey charts are here and details are here.
2- A lot of the websites or apps that were originally designed for friendships end up being replaced with people who are looking for dating, often chasing away the friend-looking people. Patook prevents obviously flirty messages from being sent.
3- Some friend-making apps or sites are targeted towards very small groups of people. Patook is inclusive of all genders/ages and even allows couples to join.
4- Patook matches users based on their interests, favorites, and pet peeves.
5- It's not always easy to start a 1:1 conversation with someone - Patook allows public discussions to be posted and seen by people who are nearby.
6- We want to build a safe and reliable way for people to make awesome new friends. We believe that there are people who would be great friends to each other but who will probably never meet: students who are cooped up studying all day or who can't find people who share their interests in their departments; new moms who barely have time to go out, let alone seek out new friends; couples who have moved to a new country and who don't know anybody there; people who have moved for work; and just normal people who have not made new long-lasting friends since high school or college, or who don't even have any great friends.
7- Making great friends can improve people's lives significantly.
"who" / "where" / "when"We're a small company based in the greater Seattle area (Kenmore WA). We've been working hard on the site for a couple of years now and just have had the beta app out since April. We are now ready to officially launch Patook in various cities across the world and are scheduled to do so on July 7th in the US (June 30th outside).
availabilityGood news! Patook is available on all major platforms, and can be viewed from your iPhone, Android or even your desktop computer or web browser. Our flagship are the iPhone app and Android apps, and the website is intended for people without phones.
flirt detectorThe flirt detector works by comparing messages being sent to messages that have been tagged as flirty or creepy. It breaks down the sentences using an AI method known as natural language processing, and identifies part of speech.
We got a lot of data from forums that post creepy or flirty messages and taught our system to identify flirty texts based on those.
The flirt detector even goes further and identifies pick-up lines, trained on data that was submitted to Reddit. Here is a little demo that uses part of that data: link
Finally, the flirt detector relies on behavioral analysis of the user. Who are they messaging, how often, how different are the messages. Do they tend to message people with almost no profile, good-looking people, etc.
All these factors are combined and a decision is made. If the user is flirting, their message is not delivered, and they are typically banned after a moderator verifies.
